Jupiter turns into a star
Discovery is destroyed and the Alexei Leonov escapes the imploding Jupiter. The mass of Jupiter was increased by millions of monoliths to the point where a stable fusion reaction was possible. The resulting star allows for live on the former Jupiter moons and other planets in the solar system. The third world war was prevented by this event. David Bowman, who has merged with a mysterious alien entity, sent a message to live in peace and not attempt landing on the Jupiter moon Europa.
